On the auspicious occasion of the folk festival ‘Harela’, the Mussoorie-Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) has launched a major public movement for environmental conservation. MDDA Vice-Chairman Banshidhar Tiwari inaugurated the ‘Harit Doon Abhiyan’ (Green Doon Campaign) in the Chidowali area along Canal Road. Under this ambitious campaign, a target has been set to plant one lakh saplings in Dehradun over the next year.
During the event, Banshidhar Tiwari remarked that they are planting not merely trees, but a secure future for coming generations. He emphasized that environmental conservation is not solely a government effort but a collective responsibility. As part of this campaign, saplings of shade-bearing, fruit-bearing, and medicinal species will be planted in public spaces, parks, and along roadsides.
The MDDA’s initiative will not be limited to just planting saplings; the authority has decided to develop a robust mechanism for the regular monitoring and preservation of the planted trees. The active participation of local citizens, students, and social organizations has become the campaign’s greatest strength. Secretary Mohan Singh Barnia and Joint Secretary Rakesh Tiwari also highlighted that public participation is essential to making Dehradun pollution-free and green. This initiative will prove to be a significant milestone in restoring the environmental balance of the Doon Valley
