The Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee submitted a memorandum to the Director General of Police (DGP) regarding the FIR registered against Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi in Haldwani under the SC/ST Act, demanding its immediate quashing.
Suryakant Dhasmana, Senior Vice President of the state Congress, termed the FIR baseless and motivated by political vendetta. He stated that following Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s rally on August 8, certain organizations performed a ‘purification’ ritual at Ramlila Maidan—an act that was itself a crime. Despite the existence of video evidence, the police took no action in that matter, whereas a case was promptly registered over Rahul Gandhi’s statement.
The Congress party’s key demands are:
• The FIR registered against Rahul Gandhi should be quashed immediately.
• Cases should be registered under the SC/ST Act and the BNS against the accused who performed the ‘purification’ ritual, and they should be arrested.
• An impartial investigation should be conducted into the complainant’s political affiliations.
The Congress has warned that if these demands are not met, the party will launch a state-wide agitation.
