Dr. Geeta Khanna, Chairperson of the Uttarakhand State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, has expressed serious concern over the rising incidents of violence and crime against children and adolescents in the state. She has taken *suo motu* cognizance of recent incidents involving assault, abduction, and murder in Vikasnagar, Haridwar, and Tehri.
Dr. Khanna has sought a detailed report on the action taken so far regarding these cases from the Senior Superintendents of Police of the respective districts. She remarked that rising crime, social intolerance, and the tendency to take the law into one’s own hands are alarming signs for society. The Commission has made it clear that the violation of children’s rights is unacceptable under any circumstances and that strict legal action will be ensured against the perpetrators.
Prioritizing child safety, the Commission has convened a crucial meeting on June 18, 2026. During this meeting, a concrete action plan to ensure the safety of children will be formulated in consultation with senior officials from the Police, Women and Child Development, Education, Labour, and Social Welfare departments. The Commission is continuously monitoring these incidents to effectively curb such occurrences in the future
