. The process to issue a Red Corner Notice against Yagya Awasthi—the absconding accused in the death case of Angel Chakma, a student from Tripura in Selakui—has been expedited. The Uttarakhand Police has submitted a report to the Ministry of External Affairs, addressing the specific points raised by the Ministry. A Red Corner Notice against the accused is expected to be issued shortly. Prior to this, the police had already issued a Blue Corner Notice against the accused.
A dispute broke out in the market area of Selakui on December 9, 2025. It is alleged that a group of local youths directed racist remarks at 24-year-old MBA student Angel Chakma and his brother, Michael Chakma. When the two brothers protested, the accused launched a life-threatening assault on them using knives and heavy objects. Following the incident, the injured Angel fought for his life in the hospital for 17 days before succumbing to his injuries on December 26, 2025.
So far, the police have arrested five accused individuals in connection with this case, while two minors have been taken into custody. The prime accused in the incident, Yagya Awasthi, remains at large. It is suspected that he may have fled to Nepal. In protest against the incident, candlelit marches were held in Tripura and Dehradun, sparking a nationwide debate regarding the safety and security of students from the Northeast.
**Police to Also Speak with Angel’s Brother, Who Has Left Doon**
Angel Chakma’s brother, Michael—deeply traumatized by the dispute—has left Dehradun. Michael’s family members state that the incident has had a profound psychological impact on him. Meanwhile, upon learning that Michael has left Doon, the Dehradun Police and administrative officials are preparing to establish contact with him and his family members. In connection with the case, Angel’s father, Tarun Prasad Chakma, has appealed for justice for his son.
Dehradun has long been renowned as a “City of Education,” and the police remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of students who arrive in Doon from various parts of the country to pursue their studies. A reward of ₹100,000 has been announced for information leading to the capture of the absconding accused in the Angel Chakma case.
