Heavy rain and a cloudburst on Wednesday night wreaked havoc in the Nandanagar area. This disaster not only caused loss of life and property, but also swept away the dreams of many families in the debris and water. A house where a wedding was to be celebrated five days later has now been reduced to a pile of rubble. All the preparations for his daughter’s wedding, including jewelry and other belongings, were swept away by the floodwaters of the Moksha Gadera.
A similar situation befell the family of Mahipal Singh Gusain in Sera village. His second daughter, Neema, was scheduled to marry on September 23rd. All the wedding preparations were complete. The house had been painted, and food grains, clothes, and even jewelry were stored in the house. The entire family was preoccupied with the wedding arrangements.
A cloudburst in the Dhurma area at around 2 a.m. on Wednesday night caused the water level of the Moksha Gadera to rise rapidly due to the debris and water that came with it. Sera village is situated on the banks of this Gadera. By around 3 a.m., the waters of the Gadera were at full force. Fearing the worst, people left their homes and came to the Sera-Mokh road.
The houses of seven families were swept away.
At around 3:30 a.m., the strong current swept away the houses of seven families, including Mahipal Singh Gusain, Madho Singh, Kunwar Singh, Vinod Singh, Rajendra Singh, Bijma Devi, and Avtar Singh. Mahipal Singh’s wife, Deveshwari Devi, watched her house wash away before her eyes. She said, “The water level of the Gadera was rising rapidly, so we all left home. When I reached the Mokh road, I saw that the place where my house once stood was now just a pile of stones and sand.”
Mahipal Singh says, “My daughter, Neema, and son were with me in Gopeshwar. We were supposed to return home on Thursday, but the house was swept away by the strong current of the Mokh Gadera on Wednesday night. Now, the biggest question facing the family is how will my daughter get married.”
