The Uttarakhand State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has taken *suo motu* cognizance of an alleged gang rape of a minor girl and the associated grave circumstances in the Champawat district. Based on reports published in the media, the Commission’s Chairperson, Dr. Geeta Khanna, has sought an immediate and detailed report from the concerned officials.
The Commission has directed the District Administration and the Police Department to ensure a fair, swift, and sensitive investigation into the matter, and to make appropriate arrangements for the safety, counseling, medical assistance, and rehabilitation of the victimized girl.
Furthermore, the Commission has also taken cognizance of another serious case of rape that has come to light in Vikasnagar. In this regard, the Commission has sent a letter to the Director General of Police (DGP), issuing directives to ensure appropriate and prompt action in the matter. The Commission has emphasized that strict action against crimes committed against children and adolescent girls is absolutely essential.
The Commission’s Chairperson, Dr. Geeta Khanna, stated that any crime committed against a girl child is an extremely grave and concerning matter. In such cases, it is imperative to take stringent legal action against the perpetrators to send a clear message to society that no compromise regarding the rights and safety of children will be accepted.
The Commission has also issued directives to ensure effective action in both cases under the POCSO Act and other relevant statutory provisions, and to maintain the confidentiality of the identities of the victims and their families throughout the investigation process.
The State Commission for Protection of Child Rights remains fully committed to ensuring the safety and protection of children’s rights and will continue to closely monitor both these cases.
