Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that a modern Land Port will be constructed at Banbasa in the Champawat district, situated along the India-Nepal border. The establishment of this facility will provide integrated services for both border security and trade operations under a single roof.
On Monday, while at the Uttarakhand Niwas in New Delhi, the Chief Minister held a meeting with Jayant Singh, Chairman of the Land Ports Authority of India, and other officials to discuss strategies for strengthening trade and infrastructure in the border regions. He reviewed the progress of the Land Port project. This project is being viewed as a significant step toward further bolstering international connectivity by linking it with the Asian Highway network.
The Chief Minister engaged in a detailed discussion regarding border trade, cross-border movement, and infrastructure development in the border areas of Dharchula and Jhulaghat—both located in the Pithoragarh district along the India-Nepal frontier. The Chief Minister emphasized that development initiatives should be advanced by prioritizing local requirements and public interests; this approach, he noted, would boost local products and lend strength to the regional economy.
Consequently, products from these border regions will gain access to better markets, while the local economy will be further fortified. The Chief Minister directed officials of the Land Ports Authority of India to complete all ongoing projects aimed at facilitating local residents in the border areas within a stipulated timeframe.
For the Land Port project, the Central Government has already sanctioned ₹500 crore for the first phase. The Land Port will provide integrated facilities for passenger movement, cargo transit, customs clearance, and security operations. This initiative is expected to not only facilitate ease of doing business but also significantly bolster border security.
