The untimely passing of shooter Jaspal Rana—who stunned the world by setting a world record at the age of just 18—is a major loss for the sports fraternity. Beyond bringing glory to the nation on the sports field, he also made his mark in the realm of politics.
His performances at the Commonwealth and Asian Games established him as one of the country’s most successful shooters. The three gold medals he won at the 2006 Doha Asian Games remain among the most memorable achievements in the history of Indian sports.
He played an active role in public life alongside his sporting career. He contested the 2009 Lok Sabha elections from the Tehri Garhwal constituency on a BJP ticket, though he was unsuccessful. Later, during the 2012 assembly elections, he appeared as a star campaigner for the Congress party.
In recent years, he had been serving as a high-performance coach for Indian pistol shooters, playing a pivotal role in grooming the next generation of athletes. His active involvement in both sports and public life marked him as a multifaceted personality.
He earned the title of “Golden Boy” after winning eight gold medals at the 1995 Commonwealth Games—a feat that represented the best performance by any Indian shooter at the time.
To this day, no other shooter has been able to break this record.
He had recently complained of chest pain during the ISSF World Cup in Munich, subsequently undergoing stent surgery at a hospital in Delhi. He was on the path to recovery, but this sudden, tragic turn of events has left everyone in shock.
