New Delhi: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday highlighted maritime challenges amid instability in India’s neighboring countries. Addressing a commanders’ conference in the national capital, Rajnath Singh described the influx of refugees and illegal immigrants as a challenge to India’s maritime security in the Bay of Bengal region.
He said, “India continues to face many challenges related to its land borders. The actions of our neighboring countries are not hidden from anyone. Another thing we can see is instability in the countries around us. These challenges impact our maritime domain, especially the Bay of Bengal.”
The Defense Minister further said, “The influx of refugees, illegal immigrants, and maritime activities pose challenges to our coastal security. We should not limit ourselves to routine surveillance; we must maintain a two-pronged approach. Maritime security is not limited to our ships alone; rather, geopolitical awareness and preparedness are essential.”
Reiterating the Centre’s call for self-reliance, he commended the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) for its efforts under the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.
He stated that Coast Guard ships are being serviced and repaired in India, and that 90 percent of the Coast Guard’s budget goes towards developing indigenous assets.
He said at the conference, “The government is working to provide you with state-of-the-art platforms. We are focusing on both machinery and manpower. We are striving to provide the Indian Coast Guard with all the necessary modern facilities. I am satisfied with the Coast Guard’s efforts under Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat. Today, Indian Coast Guard ships are being serviced and repaired in India. 90 percent of the Coast Guard’s budget goes towards developing indigenous assets. India is moving towards economic self-reliance, not just in the defense sector.”
The three-day conference began on September 28 at the Coast Guard Headquarters in New Delhi. According to the ICG, the convention underlines its important role in ensuring maritime safety, security and environmental protection and is in line with the national vision of a secure, stable and resilient maritime domain.
