Mr. Mrityunjay Kumar Narain, the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, reviewed the ongoing census operations in Uttarakhand and expressed satisfaction with the progress achieved. On Thursday, he visited the Dehrakhas area of Dehradun, where he went door-to-door alongside enumerators to inspect the process firsthand and gather feedback from the field staff.
**A First: Digital Census and Self-Enumeration Option**
Speaking to the media, he noted that this marks the first time in the history of independent India that the census is being conducted in a digital format. This approach is expected to enhance data quality and minimize the likelihood of errors. Furthermore, citizens have been provided with the option of ‘Self-Enumeration’—a choice that is being embraced by millions of people across the country.
**A Challenging Task, Yet Quicker Results Expected**
The Registrar General acknowledged that while the digital medium presents certain challenges, it is expected to expedite the release of the census results. He clarified that there have been no reports of law-and-order issues or technical glitches from anywhere across the country. He added that field staff are also equipped to collect data offline, which is subsequently digitized.
**Inauguration of a New Office**
On this occasion, Mr. Mrityunjay Kumar Narain also inaugurated the new building of the Directorate of Census Operations in Dehrakhas. The event was attended by several senior officials, including Secretary Deepak Kumar and Director Eva Ashish Srivastava. The officials appealed to the public to cooperate in this vital national endeavor and to provide accurate information.
