Nainital: The Uttarakhand High Court heard petitions challenging the reservation rotation process scheduled for the three-tier panchayat elections in the state. The next date of hearing has been fixed for Monday by seeking directions (reply) from the government. The case was heard by a division bench of Chief Justice G Narendra and Justice Alok Mehra.
According to the case, Ganesh Dutt Kandpal and others, a resident of Bageshwar, filed a petition in the High Court saying that the government issued an order on June 9, 2025, making new rules for panchayat elections. Also, by issuing an order on June 11, it has been decided to implement a new rotation from this year, declaring the reservation rotation applied so far for the panchayat elections null now. The High Court has already issued guidelines in the matter.
According to the petitioner, with this order, the seat which was in the reserved category for the last three terms has also been reserved for the fourth time, due to which they are not able to participate in the panchayat elections. In this case, the government said that some similar cases have also been filed in the single bench, while the petitioner’s counsel said he has also challenged the rules issued in the division bench on June 9. Only the June 11 order before the single bench has been challenged, which now mentions the re-enforcement of reservation. The court has now sought a response from the government in the matter.
