In view of the potential threats posed by glacial lakes in Uttarakhand, the state government will strengthen monitoring and safety measures. Chief Minister Shri Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed that regular scientific monitoring of vulnerable glacial lakes be conducted and state-of-the-art early warning systems be installed. He has called for comprehensive surveys of vulnerable lakes, including assessments of water levels, changes in size, surrounding terrain, and potential risk zones.
Secretary of Disaster Management and Rehabilitation, Shri Vinod Kumar Suman, stated that 13 glacial lakes in the state have been identified as vulnerable, with surveys already completed for four of them. Expert teams will soon conduct surveys of Saraswati Tal in Chamoli and Kedartal in Uttarkashi.
The government’s focus extends beyond mere monitoring to active risk reduction. To this end, modern sensors, real-time data systems, communication networks, safe evacuation routes, and local warning mechanisms will be strengthened. Alongside continuous monitoring of river water levels and vulnerable areas, disaster preparedness among the local administration and villagers will also be enhanced.
