The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has raised three objections regarding the process initiated to issue a Blue Corner Notice for the search in Nepal of Yagya Raj Awasthi, the prime accused in the Angel Chakma murder case. The CBI has requested a detailed account—spanning approximately 1,600 words—regarding the accused’s individual criminal involvement in the incident. Additionally, information pertaining to the registration of the case and the specific time of the incident has been sought
On December 9, 2025, a dispute erupted between two groups in the Selakui area. During the altercation, Angel Chakma and his brother, Michael Chakma, were attacked by six individuals belonging to the opposing group. Angel sustained severe injuries in the attack and was subsequently admitted to a private hospital in the city. Following a medical examination, doctors confirmed that Angel had suffered grievous injuries near his neck.
The prime accused in the murder case, Yagya Raj Awasthi, evaded the police and fled to Nepal.
Initially, the police had registered a First Information Report (FIR) in this case under sections pertaining to attempted murder. Subsequently, on December 26, Angel succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. Consequently, the police amended the charges to include murder. A few days after the incident, the police arrested five individuals—including two minors—in connection with the case. However, the prime accused in the murder, Yagya Raj Awasthi, managed to evade the police and flee to Nepal.
The police have already filed a chargesheet against the five arrested accused. Meanwhile, the police have initiated the process for issuing a Blue Corner Notice to facilitate the arrest of the absconding accused, Yagya Raj. The CBI has now communicated three objections regarding this matter via the Interpol portal. According to police sources, since six individuals have been named as accused in this case, it is imperative to clearly specify the extent of Yagya Raj’s individual role in the murder. Furthermore, information regarding his specific intent has also been requested.
Police Still Empty-Handed After Three Months
Nearly three months after the murder of Angel Chakma, the police have yet to apprehend the prime accused. The police have not even been able to complete the necessary administrative formalities regarding the case thus far. It is anticipated that it may take additional time to formally forward the case details to the Government of Nepal through Interpol channels. Responses to the queries raised by the CBI are being prepared. Simultaneously, the police are completing the necessary paperwork to issue a Red Corner Notice. The responses will be uploaded to the Bharatpol portal shortly.
