In the future, courts in the state will offer the facility to view digital files instead of physical case files. The government has released the budget for this. 22 kiosk machines will be installed in courts across the state.
Viewing case files in courts is a challenge. Files are retrieved from the record room on the date of each hearing. The lawyers or litigants involved in the case often need to examine these files. As a case progresses, the file becomes thicker, making it increasingly difficult to handle. Therefore, these files are now being digitized.
The facility for e-inspection of judicial records will soon be launched in all district courts. Principal Secretary of Justice and Legal Advisor Prashant Joshi has issued administrative and financial approval for a budget of ₹38,50,000 to the Registrar General, High Court, Nainital. The process of digitizing judicial records is already underway in all district courts.
22 Kiosk Machines to be Installed
With this budget, 22 kiosk machines will be installed in all district courts. District courts like Dehradun, which handle a larger number of cases, will receive more machines, while others will receive them according to their needs. Lawyers and litigants will be able to access and read their case files using their case numbers on these machines. In the future, there are plans to provide certified copies of case documents in digital form, which will streamline court procedures and save time for lawyers, plaintiffs, and defendants.
Enhanced Security for Digital Records
Along with creating digital records for the courts, the government is also emphasizing strengthening their security. Therefore, the government is providing the budget based on the detailed project report prepared by the National Informatics Centre (NIC). The aim is to ensure that the records of all cases are completely secure from cyber attacks. When purchasing hardware and equipment, it will be ensured during the tendering process that a buy-back option or an e-waste recycling service is included to prevent e-waste and e-pollution.
