The Uttarakhand High Court has stayed the state government’s decision to increase liquor prices. The case was heard before a division bench of Justice Ravindra Maithani and Justice Alok Mehra. M/s Indian Glycols Limited, a distillery, had filed a petition in the High Court challenging the government’s decision to increase liquor prices in the state.
In its petition, M/s Indian Glycols Limited stated that the state government issued a notification on November 28, increasing liquor prices in the state. It was argued that the state government cannot increase liquor prices in the middle of the excise year.
The petition further stated that the Uttarakhand Excise Policy Rules cannot be amended through a notification. The proper procedure for framing or amending the rules should be followed. The government, on the other hand, argued that it has the authority to do so. After hearing both sides, the High Court stayed the government’s notification issued on November 28.
