The Rudrapur Cyber Police Station has arrested a fake CBI officer from Gurgaon, Haryana, who digitally arrested a retired BSF inspector and defrauded him of ₹60 lakh. The accused had placed the retired inspector under digital arrest for 16 days by threatening to implicate him in a money laundering case through WhatsApp calls. Police are interrogating the accused.
STF SSP Navneet Singh Bhullar stated that the retired BSF inspector, a resident of Betalghat in Nainital district, filed a complaint at the Cyber Crime Police Station in July. He stated that he received a call from an unknown number. The caller identified himself as an officer from Maharashtra Cyber Crime and the CBI. The caller claimed that a bank account in his name had been laundered to the tune of ₹68 crore. A video call was then made via WhatsApp to verify all his bank accounts and assets. During his digital arrest, ₹60 lakh was transferred to various accounts within 16 days.
After registering a case, the team examined documents and identified the accused. On Friday, a team led by Inspector Arun Kumar arrested Kamal Singh, a resident of Village Gohana, Rajiyawas, Police Station Jevaja, District Ajmer, Rajasthan, from New Colony, Gurgaon, Haryana. A mobile phone and two SIM cards were recovered from him
