Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has assured that the state government will fully comply with the High Court’s guidelines regarding the stampede tragedy in Karur.
The Madras High Court on Friday ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by senior Indian Police Service officer Asra Garg to investigate the stampede that occurred during actor-turned-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, on September 27.
At least 41 people were killed and more than 60 injured in the stampede. Asra Garg is currently the Director General of Police for the North Zone. The single-judge bench also criticized officials of Vijay’s Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) for allegedly handling the incident.
A Flurry of Statements on the Karur Stampede
Meanwhile, differing accounts have emerged regarding the Karur stampede. Some allege that Vijay’s late arrival caused the tragedy, while TVK representatives blame improper venue allocation. Appealing for restraint, Chief Minister Stalin urged political groups not to exploit the tragedy.
CM said on X-Post…
The Tamil Nadu government is seriously considering and implementing the High Court’s observations and guidelines regarding the Karur tragedy. He further stated on X-Post that he was shocked by the loss of life in the Karur accident. He said that he shares the pain of every family mourning the loss of loved ones.
He stated that the Special Investigation Team (SIT), formed as directed by the High Court, has begun its investigation. The truth will be brought to light, and responsibility will be fixed at all levels. CM Stalin said, “Tamil Nadu has always been a leader for India, and we will also take a leading role in creating a framework to prevent mob-related tragedies.
By consulting experts, political parties, activists, and the public, we will draft a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). This will serve as a model not only for Tamil Nadu, but for the entire country.” He further stated that in this time of grief, political blame should be avoided and instead work should be done towards a lasting solution.
He said that he welcomes all constructive ideas. Every life is precious, and we must unite to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again, in Tamil Nadu or anywhere else in the country. The Chief Minister assured that the government will take this incident as a warning and develop long-term safety measures against mob-related accidents.
