Ganderbal: Hours after a gunfight broke out between terrorists and security forces in the Ahrama woods area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Tuesday evening, the forces have been successful in eliminating one terrorist on Wednesday, officials said.
Security forces reportedly reorganised the cordon overnight amid intermittent firing during the ongoing cordon-and-search operation. “During the night of 31 March 2026, the cordon was tactically reorganised amidst the intermittent firing underway. Own troops effectively retaliated with a calibrated response, resulting in one terrorist being eliminated. Operation is in progress,” said Indian Army.
A senior police officer said a joint team of police, the Army and the CRPF launched the operation named ‘OP ARAHAMA’ after receiving intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists in the forested area.
As the search was underway, firing was heard from the site, triggering an exchange of gunfire, the officer said on Tuesday. Additional reinforcements were rushed to the area to strengthen the cordon.
According to sources, two terrorists were believed to be trapped last night.
The operation was continuing when last reports came in. Further details are awaited.
On March 14, Indian Army stated that one Pakistani terrorist was killed during an infiltration bid on the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri in Baramulla district of the Kashmir valley. Prior to that on March 10, another terrorist was eliminated while trying to cross the LoC in the Nowshera sector in Rajouri district of J&K.
Ganderbal district in north Kashmir has been known to be free of any terrorist presence for over a year now. On October 20, 2024, terrorists attacked a worker’s camp in the Gagangir area of Ganderbal, near the Sonamarg Z-Morh tunnel construction site, targeting personnel working on the vital project. Six non-local labourers and a local doctor were killed in that terror attack, while several others were injured.
