Kolkata (West Bengal): Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Humayun Kabir has sparked controversy by saying that he will lay the foundation stone of the Babri Masjid in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district on December 6, marking the 33rd anniversary of the demolition of the disputed structure in Ayodhya.
Kabir said on Friday, “We will lay the foundation stone of the Babri Masjid in Beldanga, Murshidabad district, on December 6. It will take three years to complete. Many Muslim leaders will attend the event.”
The Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid disputed structure in Ayodhya was demolished by kar sevaks on December 6, 1992. Kabir’s comment has sparked controversy. Meanwhile, West Bengal BJP Secretary Priyanka Tibrewal said that this is nothing but appeasement politics.
She said, “TMC’s socialism is based on religion. When they say they will rebuild the Babri Masjid, I want to know who they will invite to that Babri Masjid? The Rohingyas who are now fleeing to the border areas in fear of the SIR? Will they build the Babri Masjid where Babur came from? This is just appeasement politics…”
BJP leader Rahul Sinha also criticized Kabir for politicizing the issue, saying he had no objection to building a mosque in the state. He said, “Anyone can build a mosque, but it should be in the right place. We have no objection to anyone practicing their religion.”
Sinha said, “But those who are trying to politicize the mosque are insulting the Muslim religion. But building a mosque solely for the sake of religion would be a different matter. If all Muslims, Indian Muslims, came together to build a mosque, there would be no problem.”
Former UP Congress President Ajay Kumar Lallu also criticized Kabir. The Congress leader said, “We are very clear. We talk about employment, education, health, security, women, farmers, laborers, equality, and inclusion. The Congress party always talks about the Constitution, and this should be the criteria for elections.” Humayun Kabir had also talked about building a mosque like the Babri Masjid in the state in 2024.
