Hyderabad: Separatist leader Yasin Malik, serving a life sentence in a terror funding case, filed an affidavit in the Delhi High Court on August 25th, making several sensational revelations. Yasin Malik told the Delhi High Court that after meeting Hafiz Saeed in Pakistan in 2006, he personally briefed then-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and then-National Security Advisor N.K. Narayanan.
His statement has sparked political rhetoric. Meanwhile, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has appealed to the Home Ministry for mercy for Yasin Malik. Writing to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, she requested that his case be treated with humanitarian consideration. Mehbooba Mufti shared this information in a post on social media.
Mehbooba Mufti wrote on social media, “I have written to Mr. Amit Shah, requesting him to look at Yasin Malik’s case from a humanitarian perspective. Although I disagree with his political ideology, his courage in renouncing violence and choosing the path of political engagement and non-violent dissent cannot be ignored.”
Yasin Malik’s affidavit comes as the Delhi High Court is hearing an appeal by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) seeking to enhance Malik’s life sentence to death in a 2017 terror-financing case. The bench has asked Malik to file his response by November 10.
In 2022, Malik was sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The lower court held that his case did not fall within the “rarest of rare” category for the death penalty.
