In view of potential threats posed by the state’s glacial lakes, Uttarakhand’s Disaster Management Minister Madan Kaushik has directed the adoption of state-of-the-art technologies—including satellites, remote sensing, drones, and sensors—for their scientific monitoring. During a review meeting at the State Emergency Operations Centre, he called for strengthening the early warning system and instructed all departments to remain on alert 24×7.
The Minister directed that JCBs and machinery be kept deployed for road restoration in landslide-prone areas, that essential services like electricity, water, and communication remain uninterrupted, and that river water levels be monitored round-the-clock. He emphasized that travel operations should be conducted based on weather conditions and that timely warnings be issued for areas along riverbanks.
Additionally, he issued instructions for the special monitoring of pregnant women, the elderly, and patients in vulnerable areas; the use of helicopter services if required; and the execution of fogging and sanitation drives on a war footing across the state to prevent dengue.
