New Delhi: The political corridors are once again abuzz with the issue of the post of national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The atmosphere of discussion within and outside the party is such that the climax of this big political drama can come anytime after the Vice Presidential election. According to sources, the new national president will not be a new face. It will be one of the senior ministers or leaders who has extensive experience in the organization and good coordination with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
BJP-RSS engaged in serious brainstorming:
Sources say that BJP and RSS have started an intense discussion on this issue. In this process, opinions are being taken from about 100 prominent leaders, former presidents and Union ministers so that a unanimous name can be decided. The party wants the selection to be such that all factions and states are respected and energy is infused in the organizational work.
Who all are in the race?:
The probable names include big leaders like Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Vasundhara Raje, Bhupendra Yadav and Dharmendra Pradhan. Shivraj has the advantage of experience and easy image in the organization, while Vasundhara Raje is considered a strong candidate due to her long experience in Rajasthan politics. Bhupendra Yadav is considered a master of organizational strategy, while Dharmendra Pradhan is said to be a balanced and acceptable face in the party.
Mathematics behind the strategy:
Party sources say that BJP is now in a phase where the leadership cannot be chosen only on the basis of caste or regional equations. After the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the party is working on a new mission. In such a situation, the new president should be someone who can play a role in both organizational strength and political expansion.
Eye on Bihar elections:
The tenure of BJP’s current national president JP Nadda is going on since 2020. It was extended twice due to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and organizational processes. Now the party is moving fast towards electing a new president. It is likely that this announcement can be made after the Vice Presidential election in September 2025 and before the announcement of the dates of Bihar Assembly elections. If the announcement of Bihar elections is made earlier, then this process can also be postponed till after the elections.
What do experts say:
A senior party leader who is also considered close to the organization, told that the senior leaders of the party are constantly talking to many leaders. A decision will be taken after knowing everyone’s opinion. He said that there is a democratic system in the BJP, here importance is not given to anyone’s son or daughter or relatives, but merit is given. Therefore everything is decided only after discussion so that no question mark is raised on any decision.
Rapid after Uttar Pradesh-Gujarat state president elections:
The BJP has recently appointed new state presidents in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Puducherry and Andaman-Nicobar. Now new presidents are expected to be announced soon in states like Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Delhi, Haryana and Punjab. Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat are being given priority because these states are politically important. From here, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah will be elected members of the National Council, who will play the role of proposer in the nomination of the new president.
What is the situation in UP-Gujarat:
Recently 70 district presidents have been appointed in Uttar Pradesh. Which indicates that the state president may be announced soon. The term of the current state president Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary has ended. Considering the political importance of Uttar Pradesh and the assembly elections to be held in 2027, this appointment is important before the selection of the national president. At the same time, in the second important state Gujarat, the current state president CR Patil is included in the Union Cabinet. Therefore, the election of a new president is necessary.
Organizational elections to be held in other states as well:
On the other hand, if we look at the situation of other states, due to the delay in organizational elections in Karnataka, a new state president has not been appointed here. The current president B.Y. Vijayendra is likely to have another term. While in Tripura, Rajiv Bhattacharjee has been the state president since 2022, a new name may be announced soon. In West Bengal, a new president may be elected after Sukanta Majumdar becomes a Union minister. Here, names like Agnimitra Paul and Locket Chatterjee are in the news. Appointments are also likely soon in Haryana, Delhi and Punjab.
