Ahmedabad: The water level of Sabarmati river has been rising continuously for the last several days, due to which a flood alert has been issued in 19 areas of Ahmedabad city and 132 surrounding villages. Due to rain and water released from Dharoi dam, the water level in the river has suddenly increased, due to which the administration has become fully alert and people are being made aware of safety.
Due to the rain continuing for the last three days and the release of large amounts of water from Dharoi dam, the water level of Sabarmati river has increased. Dharoi dam is currently filled with more than 42% water, and 51,848 cusecs of water is being released from there every second. Due to this, the water of the river is reaching Ahmedabad via Sant Sarovar, which has increased the risk of waterlogging and floods in the surrounding areas.
The Ahmedabad administration has increased vigilance and instructed Mamlatdars and Talatis to be on standby so that immediate relief work can be started if needed. A white signal alert has been issued from Subhash Bridge, which indicates the serious condition of the water level of the river.
This morning, 27 gates of Vasna Barrage were opened and 94,056 cusecs of water was released, due to which many villages in the lower areas have also been put on alert due to the possibility of floods. A total of more than 74 villages of Daskroi, Dhandhuka, Bavla, Sanand and Dholka have been put on special alert. The water level of Vasna Barrage is currently recorded at 131 feet.
Executive Engineer of the State Irrigation Department D.J. Prajapati said that the water level of the river will start decreasing after noon due to reduction in rain. He said that at present a white signal alert is in force and the areas situated on the banks of the river need to be alert. If there is no further heavy rain, the situation is likely to improve.
Regarding the submergence of the upper part of the riverfront, Prajapati said that the officials of the bullet train project have also been informed. Permission to remove the embankment was received before the monsoon, and some part has also been removed. The administration, along with the disaster management team, is keeping an eye on the entire situation.
Meanwhile, the administration has appealed to the public to remain alert, not go to the river bank and contact the administration immediately in case of any emergency. The alert will continue till the water level of the Sabarmati river decreases and necessary steps will continue to be taken.
