New Delhi: President Draupadi Murmu addressed the nation on the eve of 79th Independence Day. During this, she congratulated the countrymen on Independence Day and said that it is a matter of pride for all of us that every Indian celebrates Independence Day and Republic Day with great enthusiasm.
President Draupadi Murmu said, “I extend my heartfelt greetings to all of you on the eve of Independence Day. It is a matter of pride for all of us that every Indian celebrates Independence Day and Republic Day with great enthusiasm. These are days that especially remind us of our being proud Indians.” ‘Our democracy is supreme’
He said, “After gaining independence, we moved forward on the path of democracy where every adult got the right to vote. In other words, we, the people of India, gave ourselves the right to shape our destiny… Despite the challenges, the people of India successfully adopted democracy… For us, our Constitution and our democracy are supreme.”
‘The pain of partition should never be forgotten’
The President said, “When we look back at the past, we should never forget the pain caused by the partition of the country. Today we are observing Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. Partition led to terrible violence and displaced millions of people. Today we pay tribute to those who became victims of the mistakes of history.”
‘Everyone should be treated with respect’
He said, “Our Constitution mentions four values as the four pillars of democracy. They are – justice, liberty, equality and fraternity. These are our civilizational principles, which we rediscovered during the freedom struggle. I believe that at the core of all these is the concept of human dignity. Every human being is equal and everyone should be treated with respect.”
He further said that everyone should have equal access to healthcare and education. Everyone should get equal opportunities, those who were deprived due to the traditional system needed help. Keeping these principles paramount, we started a new journey in 1947.
After long years of foreign rule, India was in abject poverty at the time of independence, but in the 78 years since then, we have made extraordinary progress in all fields. India is on the path of becoming a self-reliant nation and is moving ahead with great confidence.
