New Delhi/Ghaziabad: Following the Supreme Court’s permission for euthanasia, Ashok Rana—father of Harish Rana from Ghaziabad—is now grief-stricken as he prepares to bid farewell to his son. Harish Rana’s lawyer, Manish Jain, stated that Harish—who has been bedridden for 13 years—was admitted to AIIMS yesterday evening at 5:00 PM for the procedure of euthanasia (passive euthanasia).
Harish Rana’s lawyer, Manish Jain, further informed that AIIMS has constituted a team of 5 to 6 doctors to oversee this entire process. The doctors on the team have stated that the entire procedure will be conducted with complete confidentiality; there is no requirement to disclose details regarding it to anyone. He added that, following Harish Rana’s admission to AIIMS Delhi at 5:00 PM on Saturday, the medical team will now decide on the subsequent steps of the procedure. The doctors have not provided extensive details regarding this process, noting that it falls within their professional domain, and they will proceed with their duties accordingly.
It is reported that, as part of the euthanasia procedure, the tubes currently inserted to provide Harish Rana with a liquid diet and to facilitate the elimination of waste will be removed, and he will be returned to a natural physiological state. Thereafter, he will remain alive for whatever duration his body sustains him. Following his passing, his mortal remains will be handed over to his family. Since Harish Rana’s family has expressed a desire to donate his organs, the medical team will first conduct a thorough examination of all his organs to determine which ones are viable for donation. The subsequent procedures will commence thereafter.
It is worth noting that 13 years ago, while studying in Chandigarh, Harish Rana fell from the fourth floor of the Rana PG accommodation. This incident resulted in severe brain injuries. Since then, he has remained in a comatose state. For the past 13 years, his father, Ashok Rana, and his mother have been tirelessly caring for him at his bedside. However, after seeing no improvement in his condition, his father filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking Harish Rana’s voluntary euthanasia, in response to which the Supreme Court granted permission for passive euthanasia. Following this, Harish Rana has now been admitted to AIIMS.
