New Delhi: On Thursday, during the discussion on the VB G Ram Ji Bill, when Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan was giving his reply, some Congress MPs threw pieces of paper at him. BJP MP Nishikant Dubey has complained about this to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. He has accused these Congress MPs of breach of privilege and contempt of the House. Speaker Om Birla is considering the matter. According to reports, Speaker Om Birla has accepted the notice and said that it will be sent to the Lok Sabha Privileges Committee for investigation.
The BJP MP has named eight Congress MPs: Hibi Eden, Dean Kuriakose, S Murasoli, K Gopinath, Shashikant Senthil, Shafi Parambil, S Venkatesan, and Jyotimani. Dubey has described the behavior of these MPs as insulting and unbecoming. Discussion on this notice has intensified. It is being said that the Lok Sabha Speaker is seriously considering the matter.
Dubey alleged, “They continuously obstructed the smooth functioning of the House by creating obstacles for the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and the officers assisting in the proceedings of the House.”
BJP member Dubey said, “Thus, this is misconduct in the House, defiance of the authority of the Lok Sabha Speaker, and obstructing the officers of the House in the discharge of their duties, which clearly constitutes a collective breach of privileges of the Members of Parliament and contempt of the House.”
The BJP has alleged that while the Congress members had every right to protest when the Agriculture Minister was giving his reply, the manner in which they behaved, tearing up copies of the bill and waving them in the air in front of the minister, was completely inappropriate.
It is worth noting that Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan was replying to the discussion on the G Ram Ji Bill. He told the Congress members that by doing this, they were killing Gandhi’s ideals. This bill will replace MNREGA. The bill includes a provision to provide employment to rural people for up to 125 days a year. Opposition members protested against the bill, claiming that Mahatma Gandhi’s name had been removed from it. They argued that while the bill mentions employment, it doesn’t guarantee it. They also stated that MNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) is a demand-driven scheme, whereas the new scheme, named after G. Ram, would be entirely dependent on the central government, meaning they would provide employment only when they wished to, and not otherwise.
