New Delhi: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court challenging the Lokpal’s order allowing the CBI to file a charge sheet in the bribery case. A bench headed by Justice Anil Khetarpal heard the matter today.
The Delhi High Court has ordered a hearing on November 21 on Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra’s petition challenging the Lokpal’s order allowing the CBI to file a charge sheet in the bribery case. The bench headed by Justice Anil Khetarpal noted that the petition appeared in the media before it reached the court.
On November 12, the full bench of the Lokpal, exercising its powers under Section 20(7)(a) and Section 23(1) of the Lokpal Act, ordered the filing of a charge sheet against Mahua Moitra within four weeks. Mahua Moitra has challenged this decision of the Lokpal in her petition. Moitra has stated that the Lokpal’s order violates the principles of natural justice, and that the Lokpal did not give her a chance to present her case before delivering its decision.
The CBI submitted its report to the Lokpal in July. On March 21, 2024, the CBI filed an FIR against Moitra and businessman Hiranandani under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Mahua Moitra is accused of accepting bribes from Hiranandani to ask questions about Adani and also sharing her login password with him.
Mahua Moitra is a Member of Parliament from the Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal. Her Lok Sabha membership was terminated on December 8, 2023. The Parliamentary Ethics Committee found the allegations of Moitra asking questions for money to be true and recommended that she be terminated from Parliament.
