Chennai: Commodore Suvrat Magan, Officer-in-Charge (Tamil Nadu and Puducherry), Indian Navy, stated that if Indian fishermen cross the border, the Sri Lankan Navy takes action to arrest them. During a press conference held at INS Adyar Naval Headquarters in Chennai in connection with the Indian Navy’s ‘Great Marathon,’ the naval officer was asked about the frequent arrests of Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy.
Commodore Suvrat Magan responded, “The Indian Navy has always stood with the fishing community. We ensure the safety of our fishermen in the Palk Bay. The Navy is continuously patrolling for the safety of fishermen. Sometimes, if our Indian fishermen cross the border, the Sri Lankan Navy takes action. We are conducting daily awareness campaigns with the local fishing community for the welfare and safety of fishermen.”
Speaking about the ‘Maha Marathon’ at the press conference, he said, “The Indian Navy’s Maha Marathon is scheduled to be held in Chennai on December 14th. This competition aims to create awareness among the people by highlighting three important issues: ‘Drug-Free India,’ ‘Women’s Power,’ and ‘Standing Up Against Online Gambling.'”
He said that this competition will not be like a typical marathon. It is an effort to unite people to enhance physical strength, national unity, and a spirit of service. We also want to convey the common purpose and values of selflessness to the people.
Elaborating on the features designed for the competition, Commodore Suvrat Magan said, “The competition will be held in three categories: the INS 21.1 km Marathon, the INS 10 km Parundhu Run, and the INS 5 km Pallav Run. Participants over 18 years of age can participate in the 21.1 km marathon, those over 15 years of age can participate in the 10 km race, and there is no age limit for the 5 km race.”
Participants will be provided with all basic amenities, including drinking water, medical care, and ambulances. A total of 8,000 to 10,000 people are expected to participate. Winners in various categories will receive a total prize money of ₹10 lakh.
A special T-shirt for the marathon competition was unveiled before the press conference.
