New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday directed the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) to finalise their preparations for special in-depth revision of the electoral roll (SIR) in their respective states and union territories (UTs). The Election Commission issued these instructions on the closing day of the two-day CEOs’s conference at the India International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Management (IIIDEM) in New Delhi.
The conference was chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in the presence of Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. During the conference, the Election Commission of India assessed the progress made on the directions issued earlier to the Chief Executive Officers to match the current voters as per the previous SIR in the state or union territories.
The Election Commission also interacted in person with the chief executive officers of the electoral states or union territories of Assam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala and West Bengal.
The conference was held as a follow-up to the SIR Readiness Conference held on September 10, 2025. During this time, all the States or UTs gave detailed presentations on the number of voters in their respective states/UTs as per the previous complete SIR, the qualifying date of the final SIR and the electoral roll.
It is noteworthy that the SIR was held in Bihar before the announcement of the assembly elections. Assembly elections in Bihar will be held in two phases on November 6 and 11. Counting of votes will take place on November 14.
In the 2020 assembly elections in Bihar, the BJP and JD(U)-led NDA won 125 seats, while the RJD and Congress-led grand alliance won 110 seats, while other parties won eight seats. The RJD was the single largest party, winning 75 assembly seats. The BJP won 74 seats and the JD(U) 43 seats.
