New Delhi: Former IAS officer Kannan Gopinathan joined the Congress party on Monday. Gopinathan made headlines in 2019 when he resigned as an IAS officer and raised his voice against the creation of Jammu and Kashmir from a Union Territory from the state. Gopinathan joined the party at the Congress headquarters in the presence of Congress General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal and the head of the party’s media and publicity department Pawan Khera.
“After formally joining the Congress, former IAS officer Gopinathan attacked the ruling system, saying, “I resigned from my job in 2019, then I knew that the direction in which the government is taking the country was wrong.” I also know that I have to fight against this wrong. “After taking this decision, I visited 80-90 districts across the country, talked to people and met many leaders,”he said.” I realized that only the Congress party can take this country in the right direction. “Welcoming him to the Congress, Venugopal said, “We warmly welcome Kannan Gopinathan, a former IAS officer and fearless voice of democracy, to the Congress family.” He has worked as a principled administrator, an active citizen and a committed democrat and his joining the party will surely give a boost to our movement which stands to protect India’s Constitution, freedom and inclusive social fabric. This is the right time to fight against the divisive agenda…
Venugopal said Gopinathan’s joining the Congress party is a clear message that it is the only party that is fighting for justice and whose ideology is very clear. “Hitting out at the BJP, Venugopal said, “He had resigned in 2019, but his resignation has not been accepted yet.” Bureaucrats fighting for justice and marginalized people are being punished by the government – this phenomenon is evident in both Haryana and Madhya Pradesh. Even the Chief Justice of India is not untouched by these attacks. This is the right time to fight against this divisive agenda. Speaking on the occasion, Pawan Khera said, Kannan Gopinathan was an IAS officer of 2012 batch. He raised his voice at a time when it was almost impossible to speak in the country. He raised his voice against making Jammu and Kashmir a Union Territory from a state. He was also vocal on the issue of CAA. He conveyed the message that people’s right to freedom of expression cannot be taken away.
“We are happy that Gopinathan chose the Congress party.” Our doors are open to every voice that speaks for freedom and justice.”
