Chandigarh: After Prime Minister Narendra Modi, now senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is on a tour of Punjab. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi is visiting flood-affected areas in Amritsar and Gurdaspur.
Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi visited Baba Budha Ji Samadhi Sthal Gurudwara at Ramdas in Amritsar after reaching Punjab on Monday.
During his visit, Rahul Gandhi paid obeisance at the Gurudwara. The Leader of Opposition also visited a house in Bhonewal village before paying tribute to Baba Budha Sahib’s Samadhi.
After visiting the Gurudwara, Rahul Gandhi has set out to visit the flood-affected areas of Ajnala, Ramdas, Gurdaspur and Pathankot. He will interact with flood-affected families in these areas.
Apart from this, Gandhi will also visit Gurchak village in Gurdaspur district. Ahead of his visit, the village head said that they are planning to put forth their demands for the construction of a check dam to prevent the river water from entering their village and damaging crops and land. He also informed that the floods have destroyed all their crops.
Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira announced that Rahul Gandhi will assess the efforts made by the central and state governments to deal with the floods in Ramdas. He also informed that Rahul Gandhi will meet the families affected by the disaster. Khaira stressed that Congress workers have made significant contributions to help the victims.
During Rahul Gandhi’s visit, former cabinet minister and former MLA Navjot Kaur Sidhu, representing the Congress party, said that Rahul Gandhi has inspired everyone to serve. Speaking to reporters, Sidhu stressed that although her husband Navjot Singh Sidhu could not visit the flood-affected areas, the former cricketer has provided assistance to the victims.
But Sidhu also blamed the state government for the flood situation and said if proper preparations had been made, people would not have to face these challenges today.
Echoing similar sentiments, Congress leader Pargat Singh said Punjab has suffered a lot due to the recent floods and asserted that Rahul Gandhi is the only person who truly understands the pain of the people of Punjab. He criticised the government for not making adequate preparations for the floods and said the SDRF funds have not been accounted for properly.
Meanwhile, according to the latest flood report, a total of 1,98,525 hectares of crop area has been affected in Punjab, with Gurdaspur (40,169 hectares), Patiala (17,690 hectares), Tarn Taran (12,828 hectares), Fazilka (25,182 hectares), Ferozepur (17,257 hectares) and Kapurthala (17,574 hectares) among others suffering heavy losses.
According to Punjab Revenue, Rehabilitation and Disaster Management Minister Hardeep Singh, a total of 56 people have died so far due to floods across the state.
If we notice, after the floods, the tour of leaders in Punjab continues. The recent floods in Punjab have affected more than 3 lakh people. Apart from this, 56 people have lost their lives and 4 people are missing due to floods and rains in Punjab.
So far, 15 districts of Punjab are most affected by the floods. If we talk about the crop loss in Punjab so far, a total of 1,98,525.6 hectares of crops have been destroyed.
This time in Punjab, rain and floods have taken away the roof from the heads of many people and their families. More than 2300 villages have been affected. Apart from this, 56 people have died so far. The Punjab Information and Public Relations Department has released a media bulletin till September 13.
So far 56 people have died due to floods in 15 districts of Punjab. 7 people have died in Amritsar, 5 in Barnala, 4 in Bathinda, 7 in Hoshiarpur, 2 in Gurdaspur, 3 in Fazilka, 5 in Ludhiana, 5 in Mansa, 6 in Pathankot, 2 in Patiala, 2 in Rupnagar, 2 in Mohali and 1 in Sangrur. Apart from this, 3 people are missing in Pathankot and 1 in Jalandhar.
According to the media bulletin, 2384 villages in 23 districts of Punjab have been affected by the floods. If we count the people affected by the floods in the whole of Punjab, then 3 lakh 89 thousand 176 people are affected by the floods. A total of 23,340 people were evacuated safely from the flood affected areas.
If we talk about crop loss in Punjab so far, a total of 1,98,525.6 hectares of crops have been destroyed. The districts most affected by the floods are Fazilka, Mansa, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Sangrur, Patiala, Pathankot and Tarn Taran.
