Mumbai: The Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai after heavy rains overnight led to severe waterlogging in many parts of the city. According to IMD Mumbai, heavy rains are expected in Mumbai and adjoining Thane and Raigad districts.
During this time, there is a possibility of thunderstorms, lightning and wind at a speed of 30-40 kmph. Torrential rains disrupted traffic movement in many areas. Mumbai Traffic Police announced the closure of traffic on Andheri Subway early Monday due to one to one and a half feet of rainwater accumulated there.
Mumbai Traffic Police posted on X, ‘Traffic was closed at Andheri Subway (Andheri West) due to accumulation of one to one and a half feet of rainwater. Traffic was diverted via Gokhale Bridge. Meanwhile, citizens of Pune also experienced heavy rains on Monday morning.
The forecast issued by the IMD said, ‘Light to moderate rain is likely at many places in Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada on September 16. On the other hand, heavy rains are likely in Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada on Monday.
Waterlogging due to heavy rains in Hyderabad, two people feared swept away
At least two people are feared to have been swept away in a drain due to heavy rains in Hyderabad on Sunday evening. The rains led to waterlogging on the roads and disrupted traffic at various places in the city. Police said the incident occurred around 8.30 pm due to the rise in water due to heavy rains in Afzalsagar.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Asif Nagar Division) B Kishan Kumar told PTI Videos, “Two people were swept away in the drain due to heavy rains. Search operation has been started. They have not been traced yet.” The Telangana Development Planning Society said that the Buddhist Nagar Community Hall in Musheerabad received the highest rainfall of 124 mm. It was followed by MCH Colony, Library Building at 118.5 mm and Jawahar Nagar Community Hall at 114.3 mm. Both were in Musheerabad between 8.30 am and 11 pm.
The torrential rains led to waterlogging and overflowing of roads at several places while the city’s disaster management personnel, traffic police and civic teams cleared the waterlogged areas and helped in smooth flow of traffic.
Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Mayor Vijayalakshmi Gadwal said in a post on Twitter that she was monitoring the situation. Officials were directed to use some more motors to clear the water quickly.
Heavy rain forecast in several districts of Tamil Nadu
Several districts in Tamil Nadu are likely to receive heavy rains in the next few days. The Meteorological Department has issued forecasts for various regions of the state throughout the week. According to the IMD, heavy rains are likely at isolated places in Erode, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tirupattur, Salem and Vellore districts on Tuesday (September 16).
Other parts of the state may also receive light to moderate rainfall as monsoon activity strengthens. On Wednesday, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi and Villupuram districts as well as Puducherry are likely to receive rains with heavy rainfall.
The rain activity is likely to intensify further on Thursday, covering Salem, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Ariyalur, Perambalur and Mayiladuthurai districts.
By Friday, the IMD expects heavy rains in parts of Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Vellore and Kancheepuram districts, indicating weekend rains for northern Tamil Nadu. Chennai is expected to receive light rains in some areas on Monday. Local showers are possible during the evening and night.
