To curb uncontrolled and illegal construction in Dehradun, the Mussoorie-Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) took significant action on Tuesday, sealing construction sites at several locations. Acting on regular surveillance, received complaints, and directives from higher officials, the Authority’s enforcement team conducted drives across various areas to identify construction projects being undertaken without approved building plans, and took immediate action against them.
During an inspection, an illegal commercial construction project being carried out by Yunus in the Azad ColonyโSana Masjid areaโwas detected. The investigation revealed that the construction work was proceeding without an approved building plan or the necessary permits, constituting a clear violation of the Authority’s regulations. The team arrived at the site and sealed the construction premises.
The Authority also demonstrated strictness in the Kalinga Vihar area, located near Kargi Chowk. Here, construction work being undertaken by Sanjay Bamola was found to lack the necessary documentation. Deeming the project illegal, the Authority’s team proceeded to seal the site on the spot. According to officials, the builders in both instances had been previously apprised of the regulations; however, they chose to disregard the rules nonetheless.
Acting on the directives of MDDA Vice Chairman Banshidhar Tiwari, a comprehensive joint inspection and intensive verification drive was conducted in Sector-12 of the Pachhwadoon region. During this operation, the enforcement team conducted on-site inspections of various construction sites within the area, scrutinizing documents related to building plan approvals, sanctioned maps, and other essential records submitted by the builders. A total of 14 construction projectsโencompassing both residential and commercial structuresโwere examined during the drive. In several instances during the inspections, builders failed to produce the requisite documents or provide satisfactory explanations. Such cases have been identified, and further action will be initiated against them. Additionally, land-plotting activity being carried out at one specific location was halted with immediate effect. The Authority has unequivocally stated that strict action against those who violate regulations will continue in the future. *Statement by Vice Chairman Banshidhar Tiwari*
MDDA Vice Chairman Banshidhar Tiwari stated that a zero-tolerance policy against illegal constructions is being strictly enforced within the Authority’s jurisdiction. He emphasized that, for the planned and systematic development of Dehradun, it is imperative that all construction activities adhere to prescribed standards. Constructions undertaken without approved building plansโor in violation of established regulationsโare not only illegal but also contribute to urban disorder in the future. He clarified that in such cases, strict punitive measuresโincluding sealing and demolitionโwill be initiated. While directing the enforcement team to maintain regular vigilance and take prompt action, Tiwari appealed to the general public to strictly abide by the regulations.
*Statement by Secretary Mohan Singh Barnia*
Authority Secretary Mohan Singh Barnia informed that the MDDA is conducting continuous inspection drives across various sectors of the city. He stated that action is taken on a priority basis whenever a complaint regarding illegal construction is received. Today’s sealing operation is a part of this ongoing initiative. He further noted that regulatory action, in accordance with established norms, will be taken against those builders who failed to produce the requisite documentation during the inspections. Barnia affirmed that the Authority’s objective is to establish complete control over illegal constructions within the city, and to this end, the enforcement campaign will continue unabated.
