New Delhi: At the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will embark on a five-day visit to India starting February 18th. According to the Brazilian President’s schedule, he will participate in the second AI Impact Summit in the national capital from February 19th to 20th. A bilateral meeting between the Indian Prime Minister and the Brazilian President is scheduled for February 21st.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced the Brazilian President’s visit in a release, stating, “During President Lula’s state visit, President Draupadi Murmu is expected to call on him, and a banquet will be hosted in his honor.”
Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar are expected to meet President Lula.
Prime Minister Modi will meet the Brazilian President on February 21. The two leaders will review all aspects of bilateral relations. It added, “The Prime Minister will host a luncheon in honor of the visiting guest.”
During their meeting, the two leaders will also exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest, including cooperation in multilateral forums, reformed multilateralism, global governance, and issues related to the Global South. Brazil is expected to bring a large delegation of approximately 14 ministers and top CEOs of Brazilian companies.
The accompanying ministers will hold meetings with their Indian counterparts. It added, “Business conferences being held during the visit of the Brazilian President are being held with the CEOs.” He is expected to participate in the forum, which reflects the growing trade and commercial engagement between the two countries.”
Notably, the upcoming visit will be President Lula’s sixth visit to India. He first visited India in 2004 as a guest of honor at the Republic Day celebrations and last visited India for the G20 Summit in September 2023. However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Lula have met frequently in between.
It is worth noting that Prime Minister Modi was in Brasilia on a state visit from July 7-8, 2025, the first state visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years. The two leaders also met in Johannesburg during the G20 in November 2025.
India and Brazil have a strong, close, and multifaceted strategic partnership, based on shared democratic values, close people-to-people ties, and growing cooperation in key sectors.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the two major democracies have been strategic partners since 2006. Brazil is India’s largest trading partner in the LAC region and has a strong presence in trade and Bilateral relations continue to deepen in areas such as investment. Bilateral engagement has also deepened in areas such as defense, energy, agriculture, health and pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, critical minerals, rare earth materials, science and technology, and innovation, including cooperation in the areas of digital public infrastructure (DPI) and AI, space, and people-to-people contacts.
It stated that the two countries share similar views on a number of international issues, including UN reform, climate change, and combating terrorism. It stated that President Lula’s state visit will provide an opportunity for both sides to further strengthen the bilateral strategic partnership and chart a forward-looking agenda for deepening cooperation on bilateral, regional, and global platforms on issues of mutual interest.
