New Delhi: US President Donald Trump called Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday to congratulate him on his 75th birthday. This is the first time the two leaders have spoken by phone in months, and is being seen as a new initiative by the US to reduce tensions between the two countries and strengthen relations.
Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude for Trump’s phone call and also posted a thank you message on Twitter (X). He wrote, “Thank you to my friend President Trump for your phone call and your 75th birthday wishes. Like you, I am fully committed to taking the India-US comprehensive and global partnership to new heights. We support your initiative for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine crisis.” This conversation came at a time when trade relations between the two countries have soured, especially after the US government imposed tariffs on India. Earlier, India and the United States concluded their sixth round of bilateral trade talks in New Delhi, which is considered a significant step towards a long-pending trade agreement.
The trade talks lasted approximately seven hours, and both sides expressed their commitment to reaching an agreement as soon as possible in mutual interest. The talks were led by Additional Secretary Rajesh Agarwal from the Indian side, while the US team was led by Brendan Lynch. Both sides reported positive and forward-looking discussions.
This phone conversation between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump is being seen as a positive political signal that could help reinvigorate trade and diplomatic relations between the two countries. Both leaders are committed to deepening and broadening the India-US partnership, which plays a vital role globally.
Following the long-running negotiations on a trade agreement between the United States and India, this new political contact raises hopes that bilateral relations will improve and cooperation between the two countries will expand in the coming months.
