New Delhi: Ukrainian Ambassador to India Oleksandr Polishchuk on Saturday hinted that President Volodymyr Zelensky may visit India. Plans are being made for his visit to India. Talking to the media, he said that the date is being decided for this.
Speaking to ANI, Polishchuk said, “President Zelensky is definitely expected to visit India. This will be a major milestone in our bilateral relations. We are in the process of agreeing on a certain date.”
He also said that August 23 is a historic day, as a year ago Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Ukraine for the first time and invited President Zelensky to visit India.
Welcome growing dialogue between India and Ukraine
Speaking on the occasion of Ukraine’s National Flag Day, he welcomed the growing dialogue between India and Ukraine from 2023 and praised the remarks of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He stressed that India is not neutral in the war but strongly supports peace, diplomacy and political dialogue.
Polishchuk said that Prime Minister Modi visited Ukraine in August 2024 and offered to help establish peace in Ukraine as a friend. The ambassador also called for India’s more active role in ending the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
UN General Assembly session discussion expected
He emphasized that Kiev, due to its longstanding ties with Moscow, sees New Delhi as a key player in potential peace talks. He also said that the Ukrainian side hopes to continue this dialogue in the upcoming United Nations General Assembly session to be held in September.
He further said, “India supports peace, dialogue, discussion and political contact between all its partners and the Russian Federation with the aim of establishing peace in Ukraine.” Zelensky spoke to PM Modi
In early August, Zelensky had said that he had spoken to Prime Minister Modi, during which the Ukrainian leader called on India to support peace efforts to end the war. During this phone conversation, Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s stand on the Ukraine war.
PM Modi said, “I conveyed to him India’s firm stand on the need for an early and peaceful resolution of the conflict. India is committed to making every possible contribution in this regard as well as further strengthening bilateral relations with Ukraine.”
Prime Minister Modi on Thursday held a phone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron, in which he discussed efforts to peacefully resolve the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia.
