SIR in Tamil Nadu
Former AIADMK MLA Satyanarayan has filed a petition in the Madras High Court alleging that the DMK members are polling booth officials in Chennai’s Tyagarai Nagar constituency and have removed the names of 13,000 AIADMK supporters from the electoral rolls to get votes in favour of the ruling party.
The petition said that while there were 2 lakh 8 thousand 349 voters in the Tyagarai Nagar constituency in 1998, the number of voters has increased by only 36 thousand 656 in 2021 after 30 years. There is a huge difference between the population and the number of voters in the electoral roll. In addition, the names of 13,000 AIADMK supporters in the constituency have been removed from the electoral rolls, but the names of the deceased have not been removed.
The petition said that due to the large number of incidents of voter registration and deletion of names in the Tyagarai Nagar constituency, no action was taken despite several petitions sent to the Election Commission verifying and correcting them. Therefore, the petitioner requested that the hearing be adjourned for filing the documents available in Tamil in this regard by translating them.
In response, the Election Commission said that special in-depth voter roll revision work is set to begin next week in election states across the country, including Tamil Nadu, such as Bihar. At that time, it was informed that the petitioner’s complaints would be considered.
Accepting the petitioner’s request and adjourning the hearing of the case to next week, the judges ordered the Election Commission to file copies of the order issued by the Supreme Court in the case against the special intensive revision work in Bihar.
