The heat wave is beginning to show its intensity in Uttarakhand. Temperatures are already exceeding 30 degrees Celsius in early March. Looking at data from the past ten years, temperatures have never reached 30 degrees Celsius in the first week of March. Consequently, temperatures are expected to rise further in the coming days.
According to the forecast issued by the Meteorological Center, the weather will be dry across the state on March 4th. As for the coming days, the weather will remain dry throughout the state until March 7th. However, a change in weather is expected in the mountainous regions on March 8th and 9th.
However, meteorologists say this will not have any significant impact on temperatures. Looking at the data, the maximum temperature in Doon on Tuesday was 30.5 degrees Celsius, five degrees above normal. The minimum night temperature was also recorded at 12.1 degrees Celsius, one degree above normal.
The situation was similar in other parts of the state. The mountainous regions also experienced above-normal temperatures. Mukteshwar’s normal temperature rose seven degrees to 23.4 degrees Celsius. These temperature data from early March indicate that the heat may intensify in the coming days. Meteorologists attribute this to climate change and changing weather patterns.
Post-monsoon Rains Also Disappointing
Although this year’s monsoon rains set new records and caused disasters in many parts of the state, the decline in post-monsoon rainfall is a major reason for the increase in temperatures. Mizoram University professor Vishwambhar Prasad Sati, originally from Uttarakhand, explained that Uttarakhand has received almost no post-monsoon rainfall this year, which has led to such a significant difference in normal temperatures since the end of February. These temperatures will increase further in the coming days, causing heat to trouble not only the plains but also the mountainous regions.
