23 sports academies will be opened in eight cities of the state. For this, the draft of the legacy plan has been prepared. Under this, the maintenance of sports equipment worth about Rs 100 crore procured from the country and abroad for the 38th National Games will be ensured. Also, by forming separate academies for 23 sports, the best players from the state will be able to prepare. This scheme will cost about Rs 33 crore.
The draft of the legacy plan may be approved in the meeting to be held today on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. The draft has been reviewed at the level of Sports Minister Rekha Arya. All these academies will start at the same places in eight cities including Maharana Pratap Stadium and Parade Ground in Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Rudrapur, Pithoragarh, Haldwani Golapar Stadium, where national games competitions have been held. Through the academy, the existing sports facilities there can be used for a long time.
All the academies will be run by the state government. According to departmental sources, the association and federation of the concerned sport will also play an important role in the operation of the academy. There is a proposal to build academies for 23 sports including shooting, swimming, athletics, gymnastics, archery, modern pentathlon, wrestling, boxing, badminton, football and handball.
