New Delhi: Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday described Urdu as the “world’s most beautiful language” and said harmony between Hindus and Muslims is essential for the country’s progress and unity. He made these remarks at the 105th Foundation Day celebrations of Jamia Millia Islamia. He praised the university for reflecting India’s culture and democratic spirit.
He said the university’s motto beautifully reflects the values of our nation. I would like to remind you that great personalities like Mahatma Gandhi and Sarojini Naidu supported this university when it was established.” Praising the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) at the university, Rijiju said he was “very impressed” with its academic record and national ranking.
Stressing the importance of open debate in a democracy, he said, “In our democracy, people express their views aggressively, which sometimes leads to polarization. But this is not bad unless it harms the country. Although Parliament often witnesses noisy debates, it remains the best forum for expressing diverse views.”
He further said, “As the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, sometimes it is difficult to run the House; But chaos in Parliament is a sign of a vibrant democracy.” Despite disruptions, important bills are ultimately passed “in the national interest.” The Constitution will protect us, as it covers every aspect of the problem and provides solutions. The Union Minister also emphasized India’s constitutional strength and diversity.
Kiren Rijiju said that maintaining social harmony is a collective responsibility. Muslims constitute approximately 80 percent of the six recognized minorities. Ensuring harmony is the responsibility of the larger communities—Hindus and Muslims—to ensure harmony. If they live in peace, all the smaller communities will also continue to contribute to the country’s development. Jamia Millia Islamia is an excellent symbol from which to convey such a message.
