The cyber crime team of STF arrested two accused from Karol Bagh in Delhi on Friday in the case of digital arrest of a retired Vice Chancellor of Rohilkhand University and cheating of Rs 1.47 crore. Another accused in the same case has been arrested from Solan in Himachal Pradesh on 31 August. Police say that the network of the accused is spread across the country.
SSP Navneet Singh said that in August 2025, a retired Vice Chancellor resident of Nainital had lodged a complaint. The accused had threatened the victim by claiming to be an officer of Maharashtra Cyber โโCrime Department. He was threatened that a transaction of Rs 60 crore of money laundering has taken place in a bank account opened in his name. He was constantly threatened through WhatsApp calls and told that verification of all his bank accounts will be done. For this, Rs 1.47 crore was transferred to different accounts by telling him of digital arrest.
To investigate this case, DSP Ankush Mishra’s team investigated bank accounts, mobile numbers and WhatsApp data and found that the ICICI bank account in which the victim had deposited Rs 33 lakh belonged to a person from Goa whose registered mobile number was found active in Karol Bagh, Delhi. Based on technical evidence, the police team raided the Krishna Stay PG Guest House in Karol Bagh and arrested two accused Mohammad Saif (24) resident of Lucknow and Shakeel Ansari (23) resident of Jharkhand. Nine mobile phones, 14 SIM cards, three check books, seven checks, four debit cards, one passport and a firm’s seal were recovered from them. Seven people were cheated from one bank account. SSP Singh said that during initial interrogation, the accused told that they used to ask the victim to remain on WhatsApp calls continuously and forbade her from contacting any other person. They used different bank accounts to avoid the police. The money received from the victim was immediately transferred to other accounts. The ICICI bank account used by the accused was used to dupe around seven people in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Uttarakhand and other states by claiming to be digital arrests. The concerned states are being informed in this regard
