The spate of disappearances in Uttarakhand shows no signs of abating. According to the latest report from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), an average of three children disappeared every day from the state in 2023-24. During this period, 1,209 children aged 18 and under went missing, but surprisingly, only 276 of these children were reunited with their families. The remaining 933 remain missing.
This situation is alarming. This is especially true when the state police annually launch Operation Smile to find missing children. While there are photoshoots of claims of finding missing children and returning them to their loved ones, the NCRB report released two days ago has exposed the police’s misdeeds. According to the report, 408 boys and 802 girls went missing in Uttarakhand in 2023-24. These children were 18 years of age or younger. Of those found by the police, 128 were boys and 148 were girls.
The NCRB report presents annual crime statistics across the country and states. It compiles data on cases registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Special and Local Laws (SLL), as well as crimes against women and children.
