Srinagar: The nine-day winter session of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly will begin on Thursday. The session will begin on the first day with a condolence meeting. The work will be conducted over six working days. The winter session of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly is expected to be stormy, with opposition parties preparing to corner the ruling NC-led government on various issues.
The session is expected to be stormy as the BJP, PDP, Awami Ittehad Party, along with some allies of the Omar Abdullah-led government, are preparing to demand accountability from the government on election promises, restoration of statehood, reservation rules, etc. The opposition is also expected to put up a strong protest on the promises made by the NC in its election manifesto.
Three bills introduced by the central government will be discussed in this session. The Cabinet has already approved the passage of the Jammu and Kashmir Shops and Business Establishments Bill, 2025, along with amendments to the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act, 1989, and the Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017.
The Assembly Secretariat has received 450 questions, 13 private members’ bills, and 55 private members’ resolutions for the session. Thirty private members’ bills introduced in the previous Assembly session are pending in the House. These will be given priority on October 28, the designated day for private members’ bills.
Meanwhile, the Assembly’s Business Advisory Committee is meeting in the Speaker’s office on Wednesday at 3 p.m. to discuss the allocation of time for business in the House. The committee’s task is to recommend how much time should be allotted for discussion of bills and other matters, as directed by the Speaker in consultation with the Leader of the House.
Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather rejected a resolution moved by People’s Conference (PC) president and MLA Sajad Lone to restore statehood. The Speaker ruled that the matter was sub judice and could not be voted on in the Assembly.
