New Delhi: The Cabinet has approved a budget of ₹11,718 crore for the 2027 Census. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav announced this on Friday. Minister Vaishnav stated that the Union Cabinet has approved ₹11,718.24 crore for the 2027 Census. The Union Minister further stated that the 2027 Census will be the first digital census.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav stated that several important decisions were taken in the Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. This included key decisions regarding the census. The meeting also approved a budget for this process. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav stated that a budget of ₹11,718.24 crore has been approved for the census.
Census 2027 will be the first digital census.
Ashwini Vaishnav stated that Census 2027 will be the sixteenth in this series and the eighth since independence. He added that Census 2027 will be the first digital census. The digital design of the census has been designed with data security in mind.
India’s Census will be conducted in two phases.
Informing the media, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav stated that the Indian Census is the world’s largest administrative and statistical exercise. India’s Census will be conducted in two phases: first, Houselisting and Housing Census – April to September 2026, and second, Population Enumeration (PE) – February 2027 (for the snow-covered non-synchronous areas of UT Ladakh and UT Jammu and Kashmir, and the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, population enumeration will be conducted in September 2026).
Approximately 3 million field workers will complete this massive task, essential for the country. Using a mobile app for data collection and a central portal for monitoring will provide better quality data. Data dissemination will be more efficient and user-friendly, making all queries on policy-making parameters accessible at the click of a button.
