Dehradun: This time the municipal bodies of Uttarakhand are expected to get a grant of more than 4500 crores from the 16th Finance Commission. Apart from the municipal representatives, the government has also strongly put its side before the commission.
The 15th Finance Commission had recommended a grant of Rs 4181 crores to the municipal bodies of Uttarakhand. At that time there were about 85 bodies in the state. Today the number of bodies has increased to 106. These bodies face the challenge of meeting the cleanliness and other standards at the state and national level. The special thing is that a large number of these are those municipal bodies which do not have their own means of earning. The means of earning of the old bodies are also not sufficient.
Most of the municipal bodies are dependent on the grants received from the center and the state. The biggest challenge is garbage disposal. No municipal body, including Dehradun, has been able to completely overcome this challenge so far. The pile of garbage and the expenditure on its disposal is continuously increasing. Representatives of the municipal bodies have also raised this issue prominently. Municipal bodies have special expectations from the 16th Finance Commission. However, how much amount will be received will be clear later.
