New Delhi: Geetanjali Angmo, the wife of social activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was held responsible for the protests in Ladakh, has approached the Supreme Court seeking his release. Wangchuk was detained on September 26 under the stringent National Security Act.
Just two days ago, four people were killed and 90 injured in protests in the Union Territory demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh. He is currently lodged in Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan. In her petition, filed through lawyer Sarvam Ritam Khare, Angmo has challenged Wangchuk’s detention and sought his immediate release. The petition also questions the decision to impose the National Security Act (NSA) on Wangchuk.
Angmo alleged that she has not yet received a copy of the detention order, which is a violation of the rules. Furthermore, he stated that he had not yet had any contact with Wangchuk. Recently, the Ladakh administration dismissed claims of “espionage” against Wangchuk.
Earlier, Sonam Wangchuk’s wife had also criticized the police action. She claimed that Sonam Wangchuk was being made a scapegoat. This was a fabricated plot. She also questioned the role of the security forces, asking who gave the CRPF the order to open fire. Who would fire on their own people, especially in an area where no protests had occurred to date?
She emphasized that Sonam Wangchuk had only participated in a peaceful protest and could not incite anyone. She had no knowledge of any of this.
