Mumbai: After the MahaYuti’s victory in the BMC elections in Maharashtra, a power struggle is underway between the BJP and Shiv Sena over the mayor’s post. Amidst all this, important information has emerged regarding the reservation draw for the mayor’s post in 29 municipal corporations. The draw for the reservation of the mayor’s post in all 29 municipal corporations will be held on January 22nd.
It may be noted that voting for the 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra was held on January 15th, and the counting of votes took place on January 16th. The reservation draw for the mayor’s post in all municipal corporations will be held on January 22nd at 11 AM. Therefore, on January 22nd, it will be decided which category of mayor will preside over which municipal corporation. The draw for the reservation of the mayor’s post will be conducted by the Urban Development Department at the Ministry.
The draw to determine the reservation of the mayor’s post in the state’s 29 municipal corporations has been scheduled for Thursday, January 22nd, at 11 AM at the Ministry, under the chairmanship of the Minister of State (Urban Development).
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a resounding victory in the 2026 municipal elections in Maharashtra, winning 1,425 out of 2,869 seats across 29 municipal corporations and wresting control of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) from Uddhav Thackeray. This ended the Thackeray family’s three-decade-long dominance over the country’s richest municipal body.
Of the 227 seats in the BMC, the BJP won 89 seats, while its ally Shiv Sena secured 29 seats. Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) won 65 seats, and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) secured six seats. The Congress party, which contested the elections in alliance with the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), secured 24 seats, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) won eight, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) three, the Samajwadi Party two, and the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) just one seat.
In the Pune elections, the BJP surprised the Pawar family by winning 119 seats, while the NCP led by Ajit Pawar came in second with 27 seats, and its ally, the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), secured three seats. The Congress party managed to win only 15 seats.
In Nagpur, the BJP dominated the 151-member municipal corporation, winning 102 seats, while the Congress party secured only 34 seats. In Nashik, the BJP won 72 seats, the Shiv Sena 26, the Shiv Sena (UBT) 15, the Congress three, and the NCP four.
The BJP’s winning streak continued in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, where it won 57 seats. This was followed by the Shiv Sena with 13 seats and the Congress with one, while other parties registered with the State Election Commission (SEC), particularly the AIMIM, secured 33 seats.
According to the final count, out of a total of 2,869 seats, the BJP won 1,425 seats, the Shiv Sena 399, the Congress 324, the NCP 167, the Shiv Sena (UBT) 155, the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) 36, the MNS 13, the BSP six, parties registered with the SEC 129, unrecognised parties 196, and 19 independent candidates. The municipal bodies where elections were held in Maharashtra included Mumbai, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Navi Mumbai, Vasai-Virar, Kalyan-Dombivali, Kolhapur, Nagpur, Solapur, Amravati, Akola, Nashik, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, Ulhasnagar, Thane, Chandrapur, Parbhani, Mira-Bhayandar, Nanded-Waghala, Panvel, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Latur, Malegaon, Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad, Jalgaon, Ahilyanagar, Dhule, Jalna and Ichalkaranji were included.
