New Delhi: In a step towards modernizing operations, the Railways has launched two Rail-Earth digital applications for asset management. These two applications will replace traditional paper-based processes with a centralized, data-driven approach to asset management, enhancing safety and reliability across the rail network.
Detailing the new apps, Dr. Swapnil Neela, Chief Public Relations Officer, Central Railway, said, “These applications, SugamRail and RailEarth, have been developed in-house and launched by the Electrical Department under the guidance of Anup Kumar Agarwal, Chief Chief Electrical Engineer, Central Railway, as part of the Railways’ efforts towards modernizing operations.”

SugamRail: For Elevators and Escalators
SugamRail is a comprehensive asset management system designed for maintenance and failure analysis of escalators and elevators. The platform is completely paperless, presenting maintenance schedules and inspection reports digitally.
Proactive Maintenance: The system sends alerts for recurring failures and missed maintenance due dates, ensuring timely attention and high compliance.
Performance Insights: It provides detailed, asset-wise, and cause-wise failure analysis. Key performance indicators (KPIs) such as mean time between failures (MTBF) and maintenance rate are used to assess asset reliability.
Centralized Monitoring: A rail-based access control system allows real-time monitoring of asset status (critical, attention, healthy) at all levels, from depots to headquarters.
Improved Passenger Experience
According to the Railways, this ensures smooth and uninterrupted operation of escalators and lifts, providing a convenient and hassle-free experience to passengers, especially senior citizens, sick individuals, pregnant women, and the physically challenged.
Regular monitoring through SugamRail helps identify potential problems, reduce the likelihood of malfunctions, and ensure timely maintenance. In the event of a malfunction, SugamRail facilitates quick troubleshooting and repair of escalators and lifts, reducing downtime and inconvenience to passengers.
Rail-Earth
According to Central Railway, Rail-Earth transforms the management of railway electrical earthing pits from manual to centralized, data-driven operations. Each pit is assigned a unique serial number, giving employees easy access to information including location, associated assets, and inspection history.
Safety Alerts: This application provides instant alerts for unhygienic pits, overdue inspections, and pits that have never been inspected.
Streamlined Reporting: It facilitates efficient planning and reporting, including mandatory pre-monsoon compliance reports, ensuring timely safety inspections.
Increased Accountability: This digital platform ensures greater accountability and a proactive approach to safety.
Improved Safety
Proper earthing reduces the risk of electric shock to the public and employees, ensuring a safe work environment. Proper earthing connections reduce the risk of electrical accidents and protect people from potential harm.
This helps prevent damage to electrical systems and equipment, reducing downtime and maintenance costs. Implementing rail earthing ensures compliance with electrical safety standards and regulations, thereby promoting a culture of safety within the organization.
