Barnala (Punjab): Police have solved the murder case of a former Sarpanch’s son. Sukhwinder Singh Calcutta, the son of the former Sarpanch, was murdered in Shahna village, Barnala, which made headlines in the state. Police have arrested three accused in the murder.
Regarding this, Patiala Range DIG Kuldeep Singh Chahal said, “The police took immediate action in this case, registered an FIR and arrested the three accused. The pistol and vehicle used in the crime have also been recovered. The accused in this case, Harjinder Singh alias Jinder, Gurdeep Das alias Deepi Baba, and Jagwinder Singh, residents of Shahna, have been arrested.”
Harjinder Singh, the main accused in the murder, lived with the deceased Sukhwinder Singh Calcutta, and they had a dispute over a financial transaction. A Panchayat dispute may also be involved in this case, but initial investigations have revealed only a monetary transaction.
Harjinder Singh had brought this illegal pistol from Ludhiana a few days ago with accused Jagwinder Singh and demanded money from Sukhwinder Singh Calcutta at the scene. An argument ensued, and the accused shot and killed Sukhwinder Singh Calcutta.
Digit Inspector General Chahal further detailed, “The accused have a criminal history. Accused Harjinder Singh has NDPS and attempted murder charges registered against him. Accused Gurdeep Das alias Deepi Baba has charges under the Arms Act and assault charges registered against him. The deceased Sukhwinder Singh Calcutta’s weapon license was valid until 2029, but he had obtained an NOC from the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Barnala, and sold his licensed weapon in May 2025. He was preparing to purchase a new weapon at that time.”
According to the DIG, no political angle has yet emerged in this case. All three accused have been arrested from different locations. They will be produced in court and remanded, and further action will be taken after further investigation. The family of the deceased will be provided with all the justice they need to their complete satisfaction.
