Guwahati: Assembly elections are scheduled for several states, including Assam, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal this year. Both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress party are gearing up for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra began her two-day state visit on Thursday. She offered prayers at the Maa Kamakhya Temple with party leader Gaurav Gogoi.
Arriving at Guwahati’s Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport around 10 a.m. on Thursday, she was welcomed by Gaurav Gogoi and other senior party leaders. Priyanka Gandhi then visited the Maa Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati around 12:30 p.m. and offered prayers.
After the prayers, Priyanka Gandhi said, “I sought Maa Kamakhya’s blessings and feel very good after worshipping at the temple.” The Congress party’s activities are intensifying ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. Senior leaders from both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress are continuously touring the state. It is reported that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will hold several meetings to finalize the list of candidates for the elections.
Party leaders stated that she will meet with members of the party’s Political Affairs Committee and also hold meetings with MLAs, district presidents, and MPs. She is also the chairperson of the party’s screening committee. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will release a “chargesheet” against the failures and corruption of the BJP government in the state. The following day, on Saturday, Priyanka Gandhi will attend several party events. Prior to this, the decision of senior Congress leader Bhupen Bora to join the BJP has caused considerable confusion within the Congress party. Nevertheless, the Congress leadership is continuing its election campaign. The party hopes to announce its candidates for approximately 80 seats by the end of February or March 5-6.
